What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the insertion of small, hair-sized needles into acupuncture points to correct imbalances in the flow of “qi” or life energy. Qi circulates through what acupuncturists call “channels” – these channels are pathways of communication between the brain and the body’s skeletal structures and organs. Factors such as stress, trauma, inflammation and unhealthy lifestyle impede and upset this communication.
The acupuncture points where the needles are inserted are small areas of increased electrical sensitivity. By stimulating these points, multiple biological responses occur throughout the body, allowing the body to regain the natural ability to heal itself and return to homeostasis.
Cupping and Moxibustion
Acupuncture by Devon provides individualized and comprehensive acupuncture treatments, incorporating a variety of therapies. Our goal is to ensure you get the best the results in the quickest amount of time. Cupping and moxibustion are just two of the modalities we may perform during treatments.
Cupping: Small glass cups are applied to the body through suction, and remain on the body for about 10 minutes or are gently moved along the muscular structures. Cupping relieves back and neck pain , stiff muscles, common colds, stomachaches, fatigue, migraines, asthma and anxiety.
Moxibustion: This warming therapy involves the burning of mugwort to stimulate circulation to an acupuncture point or region of the body. This method is especially effective in the treatment of chronic joint pain, menstrual disorders, fatigue and breech position of a baby .
These complimentary therapies provide the additional benefits of:
- Boosting the immune system by improving lymphatic flow
- Removing toxins from the body
- Calming the nervous system and reducing stress
- Increasing blood circulation to the muscles, organs and the brain
- Activating the secretion of synovial fluid in joints
- Regulating the digestive system
- Warming areas of stagnation that cause pain or infertility
