It is estimated that 85% of women who experience the physical and emotional symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) each month.  We are told at a young age, this is “normal”, but the truth is we can eliminate PMS. Learn to say goodbye to excruciating cramps, anxiety and emotional outbursts.

Here are FIVE ways to treat PMS:

1. Exercise

Cramping, clotting and irritability are signs of slowed blood flow and inflammation that can be alleviated through light aerobic exercise such as jogging, swimming, cycling, and walking according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The menstrual cycle is a traumatic time of the month so listen to the body and avoid major athletic events or your favorite boot camp for a couple of days.  It may be too much.

2.  Diet

PMS may be a sign of an unhealthy diet. Diet comprised mostly of processed foods and sugars leads to insulin resistance and possible weight gain.  Body fat is where excess estrogen is stored causing hormonal imbalances leading to pain, bloating, irritability and in some cases endometriosis.  A diet full of whole foods, healthy proteins and fats, and non-starchy vegetables is a powerful tool against PMS.

3. Relaxation & Sleep

Listen to your body! If you feel like you need an extra hour of sleep, go for it.  A yoga, tai ji or meditation class should also be prioritized to nourish the body. PMS irritates the sympathetic nervous systems making us feel like we are in a constant agitated and tense state. The more we can relax and replenish through sleep and calm activities, the better off our bodies will feel.

4. Acupuncture

Researchers at Hubei University of Medicine conducted a study in which acupuncture out performed ibuprofen by 38.7%.  Acupuncture reduces pain, moves blood and regulates hormones to eliminate PMS symptoms. Best thing to do is schedule your treatment a week before your first cycle day so that we can help avoid cramping and symptoms all together.

5. Herbal Formulas, Fish Oils and B1

Can’t see your acupuncturist this month? Herbs and supplements can help! According to the Global Journal of Health Science, 100 milligrams (mg) per day of B1 and 500 mg daily of fish oil supplements will help to alleviate symptoms.  My favorite herbal remedies are Unwind for PMS and Pain Free for eliminating cramps from our Conceivable line.
